The following is a color presentation of the instructional television Center of Broward County, Florida. Far, far away in an enchanted forest lives a fair maiden named Evergreen. She is a friend to everyone who enters the forest, and she teaches them all about letters and the sounds they make. She even shows them how to make words. If you watch and listen, you may learn something too. Thanks Mister Mailman. Oh wow, what'd you get, Evergreen? Well, I got a postcard for my friend Faye the Fun fairy. Oh, she says she's on vacation at the beach and she's having fun, fun, fun. She's been snorkeling at the reef and there's a beautiful breeze, and she says she's coming home, but she doesn't want to leave. Hmm, she always did talk in rhymes, but how come those words sounded alike? What words? The words beach. Reef breeze, she and leave. Well, Sammy, all those words have a long e in them. Longi is one of the vols. There's a E I, O, U, and sometimes y. Longy says its own name, like in the word she. Can you hear it? Hm, she. Yes, I think so. Hmm, hey, I wonder if the, uh, boys and girls can think of some more long words. Can you think of some more longe words? Say some out loud. Good, I heard you say tree. Sheep Jeep Genie, Genie, now that brings back memories. Remember when the genie came to visit? Oh, he scared me at first, but I remember when he put me in a trance, and then he took us to the circus, and we saw Cecil the clown. Boy, he sure had big feet. He sure did. Hey, Sammy, you just introduced some more long a words. I did, yes, you said me. He, Cecil and feet. Wow, looks like I'm learning a lot of long e words. I remember when I learned short U words from your uncle Ryman Simon. Oh, he was a real keen guy with a sparkle in his eye. He taught me words and gave me a treat. Oh, I was so glad we were able to meet. Sounds like you had a good time when you met him, you know, you just mentioned some more longy words. I did, yes, you said real, keen, treat, and meet. Talking about a treat makes me hungry. Remember when we planned a picnic and we all had that food to eat? Well, a lot of things we planned to eat had the long in them, like, uh, peaches, wheat bread. Cheese Beans, beets, and tea, tea. That reminds me of the day I was sick. All I wanted was tea and toast. Remember when I lost my powers. Oh, I remember that's when those words came out of the steam in your soup. That's right. Hey, Evergreen, does the word steam have a long e? Yes, Sammy, Loe words can have one e like in the word he or an EA like in the word steam. Words can even have doublelis like we heard in the word feet. Oh, neat. Oh yeah, right, Evergreen? Yes, remember when Faye the fun fairy came. Oh, she was so sweet. She even gave me a treat to eat, and then she and Sir Sa day danced to the beat. Hm, treat and beat both have an ea in them, but what about eat? It begins with an e a. Is that OK? Sure, words can begin with an eA or have it in the middle. Can you think of any more words that begin with an EA? Um, what about eagle, east, easy, each. Very good. Words can also begin with just a long e, but they usually have a consonant behind them, like in the words 11 even. Egret and equal, those are some pretty big words for you children, but I'll tell you what they mean. An egret is the name of a bird, and equal means to have the same amount of something like if I have 5 pieces of candy and you have 5 pieces of candy, we would both have an equal amount. You are pretty smart. I remember one day when you thought you were really smart. Remember when you tried to do those magic tricks and I caught you trying to peek. You thought you were pretty sneaky. Ah, you wouldn't have known except for the kids who couldn't keep a secret. Hey, I heard the long e in the words peak, sneaky and secret. Good. Oh, I like secrets. I know. Remember when you were afraid of the dark and you tried to keep it a secret and you couldn't sleep. Um, I was so scared, but sir save today gave me a nightlight. Hey, keep and sleep. Those words both have too long ease in them. You sure are listening well. Remember when you decided to babysit for a baby Chad? I thought he would scream, but he didn't let out a peep. Hey, there's another word with two E's, peep. Scream just has an EA. You know, Evergreen, thinking back, we've sure had some fun times. Remember when you had that gleam in your eye, gleam in my eye. What are you talking about? Oh, you remember that dream you had about sir saved the day. Well, um, yeah, you told me all about it, how he showed up in the tree house and oh yeah, oh, gleam and Dream both have an EA in them. And talking about dreams, oh, I remember one day that was really a nightmare. Oh, remember when your mean sister Ebilgreen the creep came to visit. Oh, she tried to freeze you by turning you into ice, but I freed you by thawing you out with heat from the light. I'm a real hero, aren't I, Evergreen? You sure are. You know, you also said some more longy words. You said mean. Evil green Creep Freeze, freed, and heat. I'm beginning to think that you should enter the longe word contest. You know so many long e words. You know, you'd probably do quite well. That reminds me. I know another person who does things very well. Oh, who's that? My good friend Angel, the seamstress. You know, I should probably call her. Hey, remember when she made that costume for you? You looked like a queen. She sure did a good deed for you. I still think you should enter the long E word contest. Well, Evergreen, I didn't do so well in the long U contest. They had some pretty tough judges, and I hear they're gonna have some of the same ones for this new contest, so I think I've learned my lesson. I remember when you learned another lesson. Remember when you tried to make your own lunch and you used my stove and burnt the toast? Well, that's, that's only because you wouldn't feed me, you know. I need my nourishment. I'm a growing squirrel. I tried to be neat. I only used 3 pans, uh, but I learned my lesson, but I sure did get into some deep trouble, didn't I? I'm afraid so, but at least you know never to touch the stove unless a grown-up's around. That's for sure. And you also learned some longe words because you just mentioned some. I heard you say feed neat neat. 3 and deep. I guess remembering has made us take a look at the fun things we've said and done, you know, you've really been a good neighbor to me, Sammy. Oh, thank you, and you know I've learned a lot of lessons from you, Evergreen. You're a great teacher. You've made learning about letters lots of fun. Like today I heard a lot of longe words. I heard long E words can have one E, like in the word she. He and we. Then I heard words can have an EA in them like in beach and steam. And words can have two e's in them like in the words feet. Peak and queen. Evergreen, did you ever think about entering the longe contest? You know a lot of longe words. Oh well, Sammy, I'd hate to be in competition with a squirrel as smart as you. Anyway, it really wouldn't be fair because Sammy, I'm one of those tough judges you were talking about. 00, I think I put my foot in my mouth again. Uh oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It's OK. Just start studying those longe words because I want you to be the winner. I think we're going to be a little busy, so bye bye. See you next time.
