Hi everyone. My name is Rachael House and I am the reading interventionist in Hollywood park Elementary. I'm also the career day coordinator. I've been asked to share with you a canvas course that I created about career day. Typically my school does crew Day in May and last year when we were sent home for the pandemic. Obviously we couldn't do career day in person but I didn't want the students to miss out. So I created a canvas course. It turned out to be a huge hit with all of our students and our staff and all of our kids from pre K through fifth grade, including our special programs. Children could participate in it. I hope you enjoy. Hi. Okay. So I am going to share with you my canvas course and how I created it. The first thing I did was I created a welcome landing page and I also created a button in the middle where you can link to all of the other pages. I also created a survey because with the survey, I wanted to accomplish two things. One I wanted to accomplish, finding out what the kids liked and what they didn't like, what the staff like and what the staff didn't like as well as giving the teachers an opportunity to know that the students did participate in the course and that they could navigate it through on their own. But then it gave the teachers some feedback to know that the Children did participate from there. You can click on this button in the middle to get to the pages when selecting different careers. I went with family and friends that I know who I knew would be willing to make me some videos as well as different staff members around the building people they knew. I surveyed all of our parents to see if maybe they had a career they wanted to share, which I did get quite a few. I also tried to focus on a variety of careers that would appeal to different age levels in addition to our pre K babies and our special needs students. So I wanted a little bit of something for everybody. I tried to think about the different careers that we would normally have on campus and touch on those. So for that I did have the Hollywood Police department, make me a video. Um, The Coast Guard was a friend of mine. I found local businesses like plaster carousel who's a friend of mine, Jalapeno Digital is a friend of mine. The shoot drunk is owned by Um one of Our Teachers Sisters. The photo journalist happens to be my sister in law and this was one of our families from our school Miramar Police Department, another local family that we know and so forth. I found also a volunteer society, a nonprofit that would be something that I thought would appeal to our Children. I spoke with the local NOva Southeastern University and their Marine Education center and they made a video for us. Again, more different things that our students would all enjoy as well as I found a lot of online virtual field trips. For example, the Cincinnati Zoo. Um, NBA careers. That was a really good one that the fifth grade boys liked Disney parks, jelly belly factory tour egg farms. Lion Country Safari created special videos at the beginning of the pandemic for schools. So they have some really good ones. They're funny to uh Nasa was another one I found online virtual field trip. The tractor supply was a virtual field trip and this is a parent from our school and this is the day of the fire department where I happen to live. I went and talked with them and they made a video. So there's a variety of different ways that you can get videos for career day canvas course. So I'm going to click through just a couple to show you what I did on the pages. I set up each page the same way so that the Children could navigate easily. So, for example, the United States Coast Guard was one. Mhm. And on here, sometimes it takes a minute to load. I on every page, I put a button at the top that allowed them to go back to the previous page, as well as answer discussion questions about the the particular career. I had links to different videos that they could watch. I gave fun facts about the particular career they had clicked on and instructions over here of what to do. So there's some different videos here about different things with the Coast Guard. Then if they click the discussion button, it brings them up over here where they can I believe I put the same question for everything. Of what questions do you have that way? Maybe we could reach out to the different careers and the presenters and ask them to answer some some pressing questions that the kids had. Uh let's see then we can go back. Yeah, the Memphis Tennessee Fire Department was a video that they had made for their local schools but they posted online for everybody. So this was a really long one, but it was actually a really good one. And then on all of the pages I also if I had an opportunity to link to a website where the kids could get more information or maybe um know more about the local business, I was able to link that. So here I linked to the Tennessee Fire Department, which was happened to be where I found the video. Okay, so for some of our local people that the kids may or may not know, I was able to include their name, their job, a photo of them or their business. And then again the instructions over here and their video and again the fun fact and the website. So some of our local friends were able to make a video and then I embedded the video directly so the kids didn't have to go outside of the web. What is a photojournalist? A photojournalist is someone who tells stories through their pictures and videos that appear on multiple platforms, such as websites, newspapers, blogs, magazines, television station. So I just want to give you a little bit of a preview of that, But I was able to invent all the videos directly in the table. That way the students weren't taken someplace else where they then would forget or get lost. Navigating back to the career day course. I tried to encapsulate everything right here to make it as easy as possible when I did the virtual field trips. Let's see like the jelly belly factory. Actually, I'll show you the Lion Country Safari one because I had multiple videos. So for here I broke it down into the different topics that I was able to find so the kids could pick what they wanted to learn more about. So we have all of the different videos that they made and again the videos are embedded right here, even though it was a Youtube video, I was able to embed it directly in the canvas box. Some of these were some of their favorites. They really enjoyed them and the people who made the videos for us or not for us, but for teachers in general, They really went above and beyond to explain the details and the facts about the animals and where they live. And it was really entertaining when it came to the survey, I made the survey in Microsoft forms and then embedded it into the canvas course and I simply asked for students first and last name, who their teacher is, their grade level. And then I gave him a rating system for the most part, they got to pick Which one was their favorite. And then they were able to pick a comment about how they liked each career and they click on the arrow for each one and they had the same questions of, I did not like it did a little, a lot. It was one of my favorites or I didn't even get to watch this one. And the reason I put so many different career choices was because all of our students had the option of accessing all of the videos now. You could break it down by grade level, but I chose to leave it open for everybody because a lot of our students will, we're watching with their parents since everybody was home at that time. Um, at this point, if anybody has any questions, I would love to help you create your course or help you find ways to get videos. I'd be more than happy to share any of the videos or information or
