Making a living at something you love sounds great, especially that passion is for the environment and in the business world today, more and more companies are going green. People that are in business, no matter how small or large business the way to prosper. The way to increase the bottom line on the way to do the right thing is to start embracing sustainable practices. Green building practices, green industries, air growing at an amazing rate building industry in general is probably the fastest growing industry in the nation. Currently, anywhere from selling carbon credits to having expertise in various fields of sustainability and going green offers a rainbow of job opportunities for people who want an exciting career and want to help the environment at the same time. I can tell you that major companies right now are in the process of changing their practices from less sustainable, to more sustainable through a variety of names. There are so many possibilities, so many opportunities related to green green building and sustainability from law through construction, civil mechanical, electrical, H V A C. All of those basic building trades are going to be looking for people that are lead accredited professionals. Late accreditation is one way to boost your earning power in the field of green construction. But what is it? A good question? What does lead stand for lead was created by an organization called the U. S. Green Building Council, based in Washington, D. C. And it stands for leadership in energy and environmental design. One of the major missions of green building and lead is to create economically viable structures and, of course, need the people. We need the disciplines to understand what the lead rating systems are and how to integrate them into building. You need to have skill sets that they didn't have before, because with a lead or otherwise a sustainable skill set or understanding sustainability, they can create more efficient, more effective, healthier buildings. And we need all kinds of experts from architecture through engineering. Many firms, large and small, are looking for the six letters behind your name, which is lead AP. That gives you a special skill set. And while we're talking about green building, that's not the only need. They're going to be looking for people that have experience and understanding off. What is energy efficiency, what is water efficiency and so on? So it really goes to multiple of industries. It reaches its arms into the stock market right now, where they're trading energy credits, where you can get a law degree related to defending the lead rating system. Perhaps my sense of it is there's there's gonna be every industry you can think of, including medicine. Yes, green jobs are everywhere. Once you learn about the specific things that you can dio in your personal life and in your career, Green Building could make a difference for all of us. Up next, we'll meet the Masters in Green Building as well as other green careers that can make a difference in the world around us. You're watching career. Watch the show that asks, Where would you take your career? Did you know many construction companies Air thinking green? They're using innovative technologies and new construction and are looking at new ways to reuse and recycle construction materials. Knowledgeable workers help make it happen. Meet the Masters. So let's take a closer look at what goes into green buildings and where you might find a green career niche for yourself. Let's start with some people who are charged with creating energy. This plant may look like the city dump, but it's actually a power plant with tremendous hiring needs. What actually do Wheelabrator? Because we take trash on environmentally safe, unclean manner. What we do is take that trash and converted and energy so pretty much that the whole basis of what we do here it's a simple process. But the state of the art process, our power that we makes it is being sold to FBI career opportunities. We huggy of various, for example, we have non skill positions, which are laborers. Then we go into skill positions such as operators, and they can be crane operators, equipment operators or process operators. There were mechanics way do have an eye tex on. Then there's also the managerial positions, such as operations monitor the plant manager, financial controller there, Contin manager, purchase and monitor. So it's a wide range of careers. A dispositive Cindy and I take is electrical instrumentation technicians. So it's a combination job off knowing electrical instrumentation together. It's a very difficult position to feel. There's a shortage of unite ICS. Maybe in this country, in this state, we know for a fact. There's a shortage of unite ICS. So recruitment Sometime we have to go outside. So whatever advise young kids to do If you want to get in a feel like this, they started focus on technical aspects off the electrical and instrumentation tree. It's a good paying job on this high. Respected, the salary ranges on ah, unite check from the Loi C. And I think maybe over $24 like $36 in Dark Cannery, there's another career idea in a field that creates energy. How about working in the solar industry? Companies that build and install electrical components are entering the field and creating jobs in droves, being in business for 25 years doing electrical work. Over the last couple years, green technology industry has come upon us, and after getting excited about it, I winter and installed my own system in my own home to show that I really drive towards, you know, saving the environment this way, I put it, and creating an opportunity for our grandchildren's grandchildren, too, to enjoy life in the world as we enjoy today way. This really operates is that through this combine, er box comes to power from the roof and it comes in here to the D C side, which the power from the roof is a. D. C. Voltage and passes through the battery chargers, which control the control, the power along with system. Besides the engineers that designed everything, you need guys to come out here, you need guys to go on the roof. You need guys to work in the attic. You need people toe basically understand wiring and different types of trades like that, which which really look forward to trying to teach people about. So why don't we go back and see where that power is coming from? On the roof. And here it is, like I showed you from the roof to the inside. This is the This is the beginning of the power source of the rays from the sun collected by the solar pounds will now run your refrigerator and your microwave and your television and your lights. I'm gonna watch Engineer and I designed a solar electric systems. So solar in itself is very green. Technology puts out absolutely no carbon emissions. And it helps reduce our energy independence because it it pays for itself. So it creates energy to source of energy. Let me show you something else. Is the electric meter what we produce? More power than you use in the house? Those sophisticated inverters that I showed you earlier. They pushed the power back on to the F B NL lines and cause you meet her to spin backwards. You see, the dial's going to the left which normally dia when there goes left normal electric meters, go to the right when using power, but seems how we're making much more power than we're using in the house. It'll spend old all day in the opposite direction, looking for people who are more technically minded people, like engineers or people who have experience installing A C and D C systems. It's going to be amazing how much how many more jobs there's going to be due to this new technology. Do the new drive behind these technologies. Energy efficiency is something that people haven't thought about for a long time. And it's something we're gonna have to think about as we continue in the future. Underneath all those solar panels lies a roof, and even here, green thinking is a driving force for workers. So what we have here is we're doing a reroute here in Cooper City. The roof is a tile roof, and we're gonna put a new tile roof on it. The way we're doing this project is we take all the tile off and we put it into one dump truck. We want to utilize this, uh, this material there is not overfilled the landfills. We take this tile and we put into what we call a clean fill This is an area of where perhaps there, filling in a lake for a future building development and that sort of thing. So we have to separate trucks to be as efficient and environmentally friendly as we can. The most exciting aspect of roofing right now is the progression towards a green technology or green green systems and one of me. But that is way have to be so much more environmentally conscious, and that's progressing every day. We're gonna need people who have an understanding of these technologies. People like Travis Knowles, a project manager who recently became LEED, certified. The industry needs more like him. Think graining is, Ah, a very important part of construction because they think of like longevity in the life cycle of buildings. And, you know, I different costs analysis, and it helps out because we're not thinking about just today we're thinking about tomorrow. So I think lead should be like, you know, like incorporated more in the future where our target is to get 90% of our management staff a certified as accredited professionals. We have several green buildings that we're working on right now that would be certified green buildings way need experts in the field. The clients are asking for lead certification, and we need professionals that can relaid the information to the owner and something that makes sense. Green buildings can also affect the workforce of the company's inside they. There are statistics that show that people who work in green buildings happier. There's less absenteeism there. There is a better corporate climate. It's just a better place toe work. It's more. In general, it's mawr. There's more sunlight there, just happier employees. And that's an important thing. I wholeheartedly encouraged anyone who has any interest and helping future generations in helping the environment in any way to pursue green building in any way that they can. One look inside this public screen market and you'll see that this is no ordinary grocery store. Hello, We're here at the public screen Wise Market in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida I'm Tim Jaeger, our manager of media and community relations. I'm proud to share with you some of the things we're doing here to save our environment. This building is a green building, and it's a design we're very proud of. The first thing I'd like to point out to you is our track lighting. Our track lighting here is energy efficient and helps us to say 23% of energy each year. Just above our track lighting is our fluorescent lighting, which also also helps us to save energy. And then above that is our skylights. This is something you need to our public screen wise market. But we're something we're looking at. Doing in other stores was also so great about our lighting here. The public screen wise market is that it has sensors in it, so the lights dim when the natural light is brighter. That way, we can also continue to save our energy without physically having to do it. Now we're headed over to a refrigerated flower case. And what is so unique about this case is that it has the latest technology. You'll notice we don't actually have doors yet. The cold air is staying in the case way have this new technology which blows down warm air and prevents the cold air from coming out of the case. So our flowers stay fresh and beautiful while we continue to protect the environment, they smell delicious, and you can't have new technologies without the people to develop, support and manage them well at Publix were always looking in our associates for people who are friendly and committed Teoh their work and who are passionate and enthusiastic about being successful. However, with our new green initiatives, you'll start seeing some new positions in our company. For instance, we have a director of recycling way. Have project managers manage all of our sustainability efforts we have in a real estate apartment are realtors who are looking for land that when we build there, it will have minimal environmental impacts. We have environmental engineers, and we have facility designers who are designing green buildings and more energy efficient buildings. It is bringing on new opportunity, and we're constantly reevaluating our sustainability efforts and seeing if there's new jobs we need to create. So that way we can be a leader in this effort. It's all part of their get into a green routine initiative, and that routine is focused on reducing waste, energy conservation and recycling. So let's talk about recycling. We all know it's important for the environment, But did you know that it also creates jobs? It's true. Phil Breeze manages the Broward County program. My typical day may consist of reviewing contracts that my division overseas managing the direction of directing staff, trying to enhance recycling programs in public schools out in the community or, you know, Broward County offices or community colleges. Things like that. We deal a lot with on public officials, from state regulators to city representatives in Broward County and also do some stuff with state level as well on through trade groups and organizations and environmental groups and things like that. The entry level positions that we have are typically gonna be student recycling AIDS and college intern positions that that do work in mainly the recycling programs. We have some mid level career positions or professional level positions who are gonna be contract and grant administrators, project coordinators, environmental planners. The higher level positions are going to be program manager positions. And, um, higher level project coordinators as well as division directors, have actually three divisions within waste and recycling services. The recycling division, which is where I worked on the solid waste operations division, something career opportunities they may have include environmental monitoring related to the landfill. There's some additional environmental monitoring positions as well as contract administrator and planning positions within that division. We also have an administration division. We have an accounting section, so there's there's opportunity for opportunities for people with backgrounds and accounting and also have a public education section. Where are a lot of the program advertising and planning events, planning and things like that Go on? And that those air drops typically filled by people of backgrounds in communications or are and things like that PR. So are green careers a good career choice? It's going to be a defacto career choice because there are so many image. It's probably the fasters emerging industry that we have today, And the hope is with the young people the schools are doing, at least in this area, the schools are doing a wonderful job on training. The little kids are the ones that are getting their parents to switch over to compact for us and light bulbs and to consider solar and turn off the water. And they are very, very energy conscious, so it's only inevitable that they will transition into energy saving jobs. As a Z, they grow coming up.
