Hey, science lovers, Molecular Mike here coming to you from this wildlife care center, where they take care of all different kinds of injured or abandoned wildlife. It's a pretty big job for all the great folks that work here. Taking care of all the animals were all different kinds of living things, including animals have certain things they need in order to survive. Just like you and me. What kinds of things did they need? We'll learn about that and more today on soaring into science. Taking care of animals like these pelicans back here is a really important job. You see all living things when they're out in the wild. They have to compete for natural resource is and the animals that have the best adaptations to compete for those resource is, we'll be able to live and survive and pass those adaptations off to their offspring. It's a process of natural selection. Well, sometimes that process of natural selection gets interfered with when people come into the environment. You see people will come in and sometimes they'll fish or they'll drink things from six packs and they'll leave these things around, and the pelicans like these will get caught up in them. Sometimes they will swallow the fishhooks, and that's when they have to come to some place like this wildlife care center, where people need to try to nurse them back to health. Because if they didn't, they wouldn't be able to survive back out in the wild. Here at this wildlife care center, they take care of all different kinds of animals, with many different than sometimes unusual problems. Whether it's a baby bird whose parents have disappeared, a turtle who shell has been cracked, an abandoned bunny rabbit or any wild animal that can no longer take care of itself. For whatever reason, it confined help and people toe lend a caring hand. Here, when these animals are ready and healthy enough to compete for nature's limited resource is they'll be released back out into the wild, where they can live the remainder of their days. Well, here we are. Welcome to the you know, millions of living things have adapted to living in many different kinds of environments all over the earth. It's a matter of fact, and environment is a place on the earth that has certain kinds of conditions that living things must adapt to. You'll find living things in desert environments, rainforests, wetlands, grants, Linz oceans and even your own backyard. Some of those environments are more conducive to population growth of different kinds of living things than others are. You'll find many mawr living things in a rain force than you will in a desert. Why is this? Well, it has to do with the available resource is in an environment. A resource is something that satisfies a need. Animals, little environment need food for energy, water to help them to stay hydrated. Shelter for protection and space so that they can successfully compete for resource is variations in the amounts of these needed. Resource is will directly affect the populations of living things. When you're comparing things like deserts and rainforests, you can guess which one of these resource is makes the biggest difference. Do you know what it is? If you guessed the water, you would be absolutely correct. Desserts are so dry that they're simply not enough water to provide. For as many living things as you're able to find in a rain forest, you can very easily make an environment of your own with just a few simple materials. To do this, you're going to need a two liter bottle with the top cut off some soil, a small plant, some water plastic wrap and a rubber band. The first thing that you're gonna want to do is to add some soil to the bottom of the two liter bottle container. Here. Not too much. Make sure you're not only a few centimeters to begin with. Next, you want to put your plant on top of that soil. You want to do this gently that you don't damage. Whatever planted is that you've chosen, and if it takes up a little bit of extra room, just fold the leaves down inside gently there. Next. If you need to, you're gonna have to use some of the extra soil to fill in around the plant. If it's a small one. Now add some water to the plant because all living things need water to keep themselves hydrated. And finally, you're gonna put the plastic wrap over the top and then used a rubber band toe. Hold the plastic wrap on like this, and there you have it. The finished environment. The plastic wrap will help to recycle the water that you put inside, so you won't have to add it very often. This plant is able to produce its own food for energy, but it will get some vital nutrients it needs from the soil. This plant will be sheltered from too much cold or too much heat inside the container, and they're still space in here for to grow for a while. So there you have it food, water, shelter and space all in one convenient place. If you decide to make one of these on your own, try different kinds of plants in different kinds of environments. For example, over here is one that I made off a desert environment, and after a while your plants are going to get big. And if you run out of space, well, just use a bigger bottle or a bigger container of something. Ever wonder how animals survive in the wild? Although many animals have adapted to living in different kinds of environments, there are certain things that all animals need in order to survive. All animals need food, water, shelter and space. How do animals get the things they need? Well, you can find out in order. To do this, you'll need ah, package of wooden toothpicks and colors Green, blue, red and yellow. Ah, stopwatch. Ah, wide grassy outdoor space and some friends pick one person to be the needs distributor. Everyone else can pick their own favorite animal to be for the activity. Have the needs distributor. Take the wooden truth, picks out to the grassy area and spread them around the area. Now the fun begins. Each color toothpick represents one of the things that all animals need. Greenest food. Blue is water. Read his shelter and yellow a space. When the needs distributor starts the timer and says go, animals will have two minutes to search for one full set of four toothpicks. If an animal finds all four early, the animal should return to the base while the rest keep searching. When time is up, all animals should return to the base and think about what they have found that all animals have enough food, water, shelter and space. What do you think would happen to an animal in the wild if it didn't have all of its needs met? That's food for thought. Oh, by the way, be sure to use Onley wooden toothpicks. The wood is biodegradable, which means it won't harm the environment. I recently visited the Museum of Discovery in Science. While I was at the museum, I was lucky enough to meet Brian Sharpe, museums life science manager. He was able to share with me an example. Each category of vertebrate animals We started with this furry, possibly Penelope. She belongs to one of five vertebrae categories. Her category is called mammals. As you can see, one characteristic of mammals is that their bodies were covered with fur. There are also warm blooded, which means mammals produce their own body heat through a chemical changes. Most mammals also bear their young alive, and from there Brian shared another of the museum's pets, a barred. Our owls are classified as birds, another category of vertebrate animals like mammals, birds air. Also, warm blooded birds have some pretty distinct differences when compared to mammals, For instance, the bodies of most birds are covered with lightweight feathers that help them fly. Also, the majority of birds have their young by laying eggs and speaking of laying eggs, check out this guy. This is an indigo snake. Snakes belong to another vertebrate animal classifications called reptile. Most reptiles lay eggs like birds do, but their body covering is very different. Reptiles are covered with scales. Many people think steaks there must be slimy, but that's not true. The scales are actually shiny and smooth. Another way that snakes are different from birds and mammals is that reptiles are cold blooded. That means they don't make their own heat within their own bodies. Cold blooded animals get all their warmth from their surroundings. Brian shared more cold blooded animals with me fish fisher a lot like sneaks. They're cold blooded lay eggs there, even covered with scales to. But there's a big difference between fish and most other vertebrate animals. Fish get their oxygen right out of the water they breathe. To do this, fish have specially designed gills. They also have fins to help them move through the water. The last category of vertebrate animal is also cold blooded and lays eggs. It's a category called Amphibian Amphibian. Brian Sharpe. Shared With Me is an Eastern tiger salamander. The word anthem Ian means to lives. That's because they live the beginning part of the life in water, like fish getting their oxygen directly from the water. But later on, when amphibians are adults, they have to get their oxygen from the air. Amphibians also different from reptiles and fish because their bodies air Onley covered with skin, not scales. All those structural adaptations on the different animals we saw help each one of them survive in their own kind of environment as well as help us to classify them scientifically. No. Yes, it's me. Or do I have a joke for you? I made it up all by myself. You're this. Why did the chicken cross the road? Are you ready for this? It crossed it to get through the other side. You get it? I think import under isn't for the chicken. Cross the road but really it was not born with so funny. You look well. Make it with impress your more chicken crossed the road because you will be changed box. Was I the one next to the road? Hey, what? That is just not funny. Speaking off. Did you know that you can use a computer? And Ryan, you compare the way different kinds of animals for detective. So But anything in what their environment It is actually relatively simple. You could do a 30 computer like me. Don't get open. Nothing. Computer Ryan, for the next one you see here on the street. First, choose a type of environment for your animals. For this example, I will choose a course in the way. Therefore I will leave. Will make a gray sky and some snow on the ground down here. Perhaps we could put a smile. You have right here. Your next step is toe. Pick some animals to place around your perhaps I don't put day. Beautiful little blue birdie appear in the sky City green part. All here trying to get into that frozen find boy. Friends surprise way Put their beautiful wild out here and they have a little grand bunny rabbit over here. Oh, yes. And let's not forget. Are you finished drying off? I will put some people with three types trees here on here and over here on how about some smaller ones here and here and here and here. And finally here. What? Now stand back and take a look at your beautiful new picture. Which of the animals really is that? I would have to say it was a mythical grab, but in this case the other animals started out against especially speaking on Dr Why did they cross the road? Hey, because it was dying with ticket. Here's another one. Why did the chicken cross the basketball court? Because it's worth the referee calling fouls. Get a ticket. Our boy was not funny. Now if you will excuse me, I must cross every one of my own. You know the information superhighway. Ah, habitat is a place in an ecosystem where an animal usually lives. For example, an ecosystem may be found in an environment where there are trees, lakes, streams, caves, all sorts of other features. Ah, habitat for fish in an equal system like a forest would be a lake or stream. Ah, squirrels. Habitat would be in the trees of that forest and the habitat for a bat might be a cave in the same environment. There are many different kinds of ecosystems found in many different environments all over the world. The different parts of any ecosystem must be in balance order for the living things in it to thrive. If any habitats air changed within an ecosystem, the living things in the ecosystem may not survive well. Here is a model of an ecosystem with the animals and their habitats. The animals rely on each other as well as the plants in the ecosystem. For food, the water supply looks like it's pretty good, and there's enough space and shelter for the animals. There's balance in this ecosystem, and there's enough food, water, shelter and space for all the living things. But what if there were a fire that were to destroy these trees? That change would destroy the homes of these animals? Or what if people moved in here? The animals would not be able to get water. They wouldn't survive those kinds of changes when they're not natural. Normal changes can be very harmful to any habitat. Well, you can help to protect animal habitats and protect our earth at the same time. How well you can start by practising the three R's of science. Reduce reuse and you got it. Recycle. When you reduce, it means you're going to use less of the earth's precious resource is turn off the water when you brush your teeth or the lights when you leave the room. Hey, and when you buy things. Look for reduced packaging. What? I bought this basketball at a local store. It was in a big been with a whole bunch of others. Well, then there were other basketballs that were boxes stacked up on shelves. I chose this one because it was just a good as the other ones that were in the boxes, but it didn't use the extra cardboard and paper needed tour. Make the box around it. In that way, I'm helping to save some trees just because something's in a big, flashy package that doesn't necessarily make it any better. The second are that I talked about was green use. When you re use something, it simply means to use it over again. Many grocery stories use plastic bags like these that often get thrown away after they're used just one time. Well, how about switching to cloth bags like these? They hold all the groceries, their sturdy and they're strong, and they can even be washed. And the best part is that they could be used over and over again. Now the final are is recycle. When something is recycled, it gets collected up and turned into something new. The most common recycled materials air. These, um, there's paper and plastic, um, metal containers and even glass containers. As a matter of fact, even substances such as motor oil can be recycled and used again. But you wouldn't put that on a regular recycling bin. There are so many ways to protect our earth that benefit the habitats of all living things. You just have to know where to start. Hello. I'm also Kirstie. I am the facility manager here at Broward County. Be if I recycle when a truck first comes on the property carrying recycled materials. First thing it does is check in at the scale house where we'll record the city in which it came from. He will move from the scale house to our tipping floor, will dump newspaper, and I will go back and get another weight. And then it will dump co mingle after the material has been dumped on the floor. They will push up the material on to feeders. From there, they will go up and will be sorted out on paper line. There will be six people up there sorting out contaminants do not belong in there. And that will be either plastic bags or brown bags on the co mingle side. What a co mingle is made up of is plastics, aluminum, steel can in glass. This will go up. A line on this will have to people in the very beginning. Taking out the contaminants there do not belong. From there. It will pass on to another set of two, where we will have people on either side of it sorted out the plastics like colors and types, and then on the other side of that we will have a glass sorted out by color type. Also, after this process is finished, the next move will be to failed this up and make ready for shipment to the vendors so they can make this into other, different products other, whether other than what it may be at this time in point. So what they will make out of plastic will be fabrics, rugs and other types of material that they use in making rush. The newspaper will be turned into newspaper again within three days or insulation. The other product that we sort out, which is phone books, will also be turned into insulation. Also, that is a reason why recycling is important and it helps to save on landfill space. A living things on Earth depend on the plants. Resource is for survival. The earth as many resource is for people. Besides food, water, shelter on space, people have learned to use re sources such as coal and oil to generate enough energy to power our homes, run our automobiles and even travel great distances in short periods. But there is a cost to using. Such resource is the burning of coal and oil creates gases that can cover art in a kind of blanket cause and get toe warm over time. Known as the greenhouse effect, this change in temperature can alter entire ecosystems both on land and in the world's oceans. Use of natural re sources such as coal and oil also pollute the environment with acid rain and oil spills permanently. Ultra precious ecosystem The supply of re sources such as coal and oil, are limited. They are known as a non renewable resource is once they all used up, they are gone where we get our energy day. Fortunately, there are alternatives. Waken get our energy from renewable resource is such as hydropower for moving water, the power of the wind, solar power from the sun and even geothermal power from deep beneath the earth's crust. Development of renewable energy resource is is of great significance toe our future and the future of living things all over the world. Energy is there just waiting to be harnessed. The future is up to you. Well, we sure have learned a lot about animals today and even a few things about protecting our earth and all the living things on it. We found out about living things. Heat for Earth's resource is and how the population of living things and an ecosystem greatly depends on the available resource is we saw how living things have different kinds of structural adaptations and how habitat changes can be beneficial or harmful toe living things. We even got to learn about the benefits of reducing reusing and recycling as well as the importance of developing renewable energy sources. And that about does it for today. I need to put this recycling bin out before the collection truck comes. This is molecular Mike signing off work hard practicing safe science, and I will catch you later. My friends
